Community

~ Organizations & Activities ~

The Cohousing Network is an organization whose purpose is to encourage cohousing and support existing and prospective cohousing communities. It offers a database of cohousing communities, a journal, and related resources.

Conversation Cafés is a form of community interaction where people gather in cafés or other public places for 90-minute hosted discussions on important political, social, and cultural issues. Started in 2001 by Vicki Robin, conversation cafés are forming all over the United States and in some other countries.

Intentional Communities provides information and resources for the growing communities movement, including ecovillages, cohousing, residential land trusts, communes, student co-ops, urban housing cooperatives and other related projects.

Ithaca Hours provides information on the local currency system serving Tompkins County, New York, and a starter kit for setting up a local currency system.

Sustainable Communities Network is a networking organization whose mission is to support the development of healthy, livable, sustainable communities. Its web site features educational information, news, and related resources in the areas of creating community, smart growth, sustainable economies, protecting natural resources, living sustainably, and governing sustainability.

Time Dollar Institute is an organization whose purpose is to promote a new medium of exchange called time dollars, whereby people convert their personal time into purchasing power by helping others. An hour helping another earns One Time Dollar. The purpose of the time dollar program is to rebuild family, neighborhood, and community.

The Tomales Bay Institute, a project of the Earth Island Institute, is a small group of outside-the-box thinkers who are committed to renewing the commons, which, as a concept, is broad enough to include everything we inherit as a community--the air we breathe, the words we speak, the traditions that are a part of our culture--as distinguished from what we inherit as individuals.

YES! A Journal of Positive Futures is a quarterly journal published by The Positive Futures Network, an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people's active engagement in creating a just, sustainable, and compassionate world. The journal focuses on community building and healing, sustainability, and social justice.

Cohousing: A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves by Kathryn McCamant and Charles R. Durrett (Ten Speed Press, 2nd edition, 1993). Provides overview of how cohousing communities work, including illustrations of the layout of cohousing communities. Discusses existing cohousing communities in Europe.

Plain & Simple: A Woman's Journey to the Amish by Sue Bender (New York: Harper SF, Reprint 1991). Memoir of author's experiences living in an Amish community. The author reveals the highly interdependent nature of Amish culture, which focuses on mutual support within the community.
